Pakad or Ficus virens is one significant tree of the Panchvati group. Panchvati is the group of five sacred or important trees worshipped and adorned in the Hindu culture since ancient time. It is a plant of the genus Ficus found widely in India, Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Australia.

Parts of Pakad tree are applied as medicine for the human beings. It is not less than a medicine for the environment also. It lives for hundreds of years and has the capacity to grow under all the environmental conditions.

It has a very short leaf-fall period and has numerous leaves. Thus it provides more oxygen in its entire life. Maharshi Patanjali has described Pakad as valuable medicinal tree. Its fruits are edible like those of Banyan tree, gular tree, and Peepal tree. All these trees contain latex. In Thailand its leaves are eaten as leafy vegetable. Location of Pakad tree in the north side of a house is considered as sacred through astrological view point.

Pakad tree has been reported to live up to 200 years. A plant of four years is suitable for transplantation. It can grow up to 27 meters in height and it can tolerate temperature up to 60 degree celcius.The rate of oxygen emission by leaves of Pakad tree I reportedly increased after it crosses 75 years. By nature this is a massive tree and the size of its crown often exceeds the height. Thus it is good for providing shade during the summer season.

A Fighter Tree

This tree can survive fighting out the conditions of environment. According to Dr. Pooja, Head of the Department of DDU-University Gorakhpur, Pakad is a fighter tree. It can be vegetatively propagated by twigs also. Its tree remains dense and offers good shade. The rate of photosynthesis in this tree is faster. Thus it can produce more oxygen. This tree often tolerates hard conditions of the environment and has the tendency of survival under any condition. Thus it can be called as a fighter tree. It grows faster in moisture.

According to a forest officer Mr. Avinash Kumar, the climate of northern India is very suitable for the growth of this tree. Light sandy and clayey soil is better for this tree. Its plantation should be done during rainy season.

Medicinal Properties of Pakad

  • The Kwath of the bark of Pakad is very useful in leucoria or bloody leucoria
  • It is a good medicine for boils
  • Gargle with the Kwath of the Pakad bark removes tooth-ache and bad breath
  • Consumption of the powder of Pakad bark can remove rakt-pitta-vayu doshas. Its fruits if eaten can remove the problem of gas in the stomach
  • Application of powder of its bark stops bleeding
  • Bark of Pakad if crushed in ghee and applid on skin can remove burning sensation of skin and skin diseases
  • Bathing in water mixed with Pakad bark can remove body odors
  • The Kwath of Pakad bark makes our bodies strong
  • Consumption of the extract of leaves of Pakad helps reduce blood sugar
